This month, New Jersey Magazine published a special Health & Wellness supplement, which provided a medical resource guide to healthy living. In the supplement was an interesting article about Carl Banks, a former New York Giants linebacker, and his efforts with the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey (UMDNJ), to establish a concussion and brain injury center in the state.

“We have an obligation to raise awareness about the issue,” Banks says.

Banks’s own concussions, the traumatic brain injuries of other players, and his children’s participation in school sports���his youngest is playing his first year of high school football��� was the motivation behind the center’s formation. UMDNJ has a renowned trauma center, including a state-of-the-art MRI scanner, and the expertise of its Neurological Institute of New Jersey (NINJ). Three years ago Banks began talks with the university to launch the center, now housed on UMDNJ’s Newark campus.
