NeuronsInAColumn1_s.bmpThe Subway Fold is pointing to two articles discussing new developments in brain imaging. I am particularly intrigued by IBM’s project “Blue Brain”. Through this, researchers hope to be able to map where information goes in the brain, how it is represented, and how it is stored. Once this is understood, then researchers hope to understand what can go wrong in people afflicted with brain diseases or traumatic injuries. While this research is being completed as a means to develop new drugs to treat brain disease, I believe that the knowledge gained will also go a tremendous way towards improving the lives of people with traumatic brain injury. Understanding how neurons in the neocortex interact will assist in developing new coping strategies for building and living a more independent life. You can read more about project Blue Brain here.
