The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention issued the following press release titled, The First National Summary Report Shows Magnitude of Injuries. The report’s data was collected from two national data sources, The National Vital Statistics System operated by CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics and the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System All Injury Program operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The report found that 18 people die each hour from injuries, and that traumatic brain injuries are a leading cause of injury deaths, accounting for about 50,000 deaths each year. More than 1.2 million cases of traumatic brain injuries were treated in 2001.
