Veterans to use UT brain scanner for closer look
The United States Department of Veteran's Affairs plans to use the University of Texas' brain scanner in a new $4.2 million program in hopes of being able to study and treat hard-to-detect brain injuries sustained by veterans.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 20,000 servicemen and women have already suffered traumatic brain injuries and other mental health problems, causing a variety of crippling symptoms including inability to concentrate, emotional instability and depression.
Dr. Van Boven, director of the Veteran's Affairs program, will lead the new study at UT. He and his team believe that the new scanner can help diagnose these invisible brain traumas and work toward effective treatment.
