Report faults Va. on brain injuries

In a report released September 10, researchers state that Virginia's system of care will most likely see an increase of returning war veterans whose primary injuries are traumatic-brain injuries. This comes after several reports already state a lack of residential facilities, access to therapy, transportation or occupational help.

This new study released by a Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission confirms years of concerns expressed by brain-injury advocates and families of victims. Between 80,000 and 150,000 Virginia residents are affected, according to the report.

Three of the Department of Defense's eight national brain-injury centers are in Virginia, including one at McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond. This new report only adds to the mounting evidence that increased support for our troops is not only deserved, but also severely needed.
