Progesterone May Help Brain Injuries
A small study done in Atlanta showed the hormone progesterone may be helpful to people who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. In the study, doctors at Grady Memorial Hospital gave progesterone to patients who suffered serious brain trauma. The study revealed that more patients who received progesterone survived moderate head injuries than those who received a placebo. Because progesterone appears to reduce brain swelling and prevent the loss of some nerve cells in animals observed after brain trauma, researchers believe it will help humans with head injury.
USA Today reports that 1.4 million people in the United States suffer from a traumatic brain injury each year. Arthur Kellerman, chairman of the emergency room department at Emory University School of Medicine and one of the authors of the study said, "We can fix a lot of things in the body, but we do not have a drug that fixes damaged brains." Researchers hope to launch a larger study to learn more about the effectiveness of treating brain injuries with progesterone.
