Professional Athletes Recover from Concussions Faster Than High School Players

A new study shows that NFL football players recover from concussions faster than high school players. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the study, headed by Dr. Elliott Pellman, team doctor for the New York Jets and chairman of the NFL's Committee on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, showed that NFL players were performing normally within two days of a concussion. In contrast, most high school players still weren't back to normal a week after the concussion. The doctors weren't surprised by the younger players recovery time, but they feel it emphasizes the need for new concussion guidelines for high school sports.

All the subjects in the study were evaluated using the ImPACT test which was developed by Dr. Mark Lovell and colleagues from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The study was published in the February issue of Neurosurgery and was funded by NFL charities.
