Cool-Cap May Cut Brain Damage
I have written here before about studies that show cooling a child's body immediately after a traumatic brain injury has positive effects on the patient. Again there is another story that supports this procedure.
The Denver Post recent reported on a new device called a Cool-Cap which uses frigid water to cool a newborn's brain in an attempt to prevent brain damage that can occur as a result of oxygen depravation at birth.
From the Post's story, Cap may cut brain damage -
... after a study of 218 full-term babies ... the use of the Cool-Cap appears to have cut the number of infants who died or had neurological problems at 18 months to 55% from 66%.
You can read more about Vanderbilt University's study results using the Cool-Cap here.
