Cognitive Rehabilitation for Brain Injury
Brain Injury made front page news in the Wall Street Journal (paid registration required). The January 8 edition featured an article entitled Why Some Patients Get No Help After Brain Injury. The story discusses the need for cognitive therapy for patients who have been affected by traumatic brain injury, as well as the fact that many insurance companies don't cover this type of therapy.
On the same day, the Brain Injury Association of America released a position statement calling on lawmakers and private sector payers to eliminate barriers to access and delivery of cognitive rehabilitation treatment for patients with acquired brain injuries.
The statement addresses the fact that an overwhelming majority of brain injury survivors have cognitive impairments and one of the biggest hurdles they face is getting the treatment research has shown will benefit the the most: cognitive rehabilitation. You can read the statement here.
It is my hope that the attention being given to this issue will help those suffering from traumatic brain injuries and their families to get the treatment they deserve.
