Brain Rewires Itself After Car Accident
In a rare and astounding case, a man who was minimally conscious for almost twenty years has regained the ability to speak and move. A report on CNN.com tells the story of Terry Wallis, whose brain rewired itself by growing new nerve connections to replace those severed in a car accident.
Researchers used a new type of brain imaging to establish that the nerves in his brain slowly formed new connections until there were enough to make network. Doctor's warn others with loved ones in similar situations that recoveries like this are very rare and it is not yet known why some recover and others do not.
