Brain or Spinal Injury Linked to Increased Bankruptcy Rates
A new study out today suggests that people who have suffered a traumatic brain or spinal injury have a higher risk of filing for bankruptcy in the years to follow their injury. Within five years after brain or spinal cord injury, 3.5 percent of the patients filed for bankruptcy. With adjustment for other factors, the risk of bankruptcy was 33 percent higher after brain or spinal cord injury than in the years before the injury.
Reports indicate that there was a link between bankruptcy and the injured insurance's status. Insurance claims and lack of payment for medical bills are suggested to play a large role in the increased numbers of brain and spinal injured people filing for bankruptcy.
