Brain Injuries and Everyday Life
Anyone whose life has been affected by brain injury, their own or that of a loved one, knows how much it can change things. Traumatic Brain Injury can change people's personalities, making them act differently than they did before, sometimes in ways that are socially unacceptable. The reasons that the brain changes as much as it does are unclear, but what is knowm is that when the brain is injured cells are destroyed, interfering with the brain's chemistry. This causes changes in a person's usual behavior, so they may not seem like the same person they were before the accident.
A story in The Charleston Gazette profiles the story of a man who has difficulty holding a job and functioning in his daily life because of a brain injury he suffered as a child. He was an adult before he learned that many of his childhood troubles, as well as those he has now, can be attributed to his brain injury. Knowing about the affects of TBI has given him hope for the future.
