American Association for Justice's National Conference 2007
This past week I attended the American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) national convention in Chicago, Illinois. The convention was a wonderful success.
From a professional standpoint, I was honored by being elected secretary of the Melvin Belli Society. Melvin Belli was a pioneer in the field of personal injury litigation and his legacy lives on with the Melvin Belli Society. Every year at the convention, the Belli Society holds a daylong seminar where America’s leading attorneys discuss new developments in personal injury litigation. Friday evening, the Belli Society hosted its annual dinner which this year was held at the Shedd Aquarium.
On Saturday, the opening day of the convention, I was fortunate to attend a VIP reception for House of Representative’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It was certainly an honor meeting our first woman Speaker! Also at the reception was Senator and Presidential contender Joseph Biden D-Del. At the reception, I had the opportunity to speak with Senator Biden as well as Speaker Pelosi. It was a wonderful thrill meeting these great leaders.
On Saturday, I was extremely busy as I gave two presentations. The first presentation was to the Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group where I was invited to speak on the topic of Handling and Using Experts in the TBI Case. Following that speech, I moved across the hall to speak to the Interstate Trucking Litigation Group where I spoke on the Use of PowerPoint in Opening Statement.
Sunday proved to be the highlight of the AAJ convention. Sunday afternoon, five Democratic presidential hopefuls, Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. John Edwards, Sen. Biden and Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico participated in a presidential forum where each person was provided with 20 minutes to give a speech and to take questions. Everyone left the forum with high expectations that whichever one receives the Democratic nominee, that that individual will ultimately become President of the United States.
The next couple of days I attended numerous association meetings culminating on Thursday morning where I attended my first Board of Governor’s meeting of AAJ. As I reported last month, I was recently honored by my state’s plaintiff trial attorneys, having been elected to serve a three-year term as New Jersey’s National Governor to AAJ.
It was certainly a successful convention.
